The modern workforce is made up of experts in every field from every country. In our ESOL Business English, one of our consultants will coach your employees in ways to:

ESOL – Accent Reduction

Do your foreign-born staff members speak English in a manner that effectively conveys their technical expertise? Do their American co-workers understand them well? While it is usually not possible to completely Americanize a foreign accent, it IS very possible to help your staff member speak in a way that will be more clear to native English speakers.

Our Accent Reduction training can help your foreign-born employees communicate more smoothly with their American colleagues. This course includes:

  • A needs analysis to identify exactly where the difficulties are
  • The design of a program to specifically target difficult areas
  • A post-assessment and suggestions for next steps

What is the training like?

Whether in an individual or group setting, your staff members will improve their skills in any or all of the following areas:

  • Grammar
  • Pronunciation
  • Writing
  • Making presentations
  • American culture

The sessions are engaging and often use topics of personal interest to the participants. In this non-threatening environment, we encourage participants to ask questions they may have, as well as trying out new words and phrases without judgment, only constructive feedback.

When working on accent reduction, we begin by focusing on the mechanics of pronunciation: when/how to expel air, the position of the mouth and tongue, which words to connect, and the rhythm of the English language. Each class includes conversation, so that the individual begins to make the transition from seeing the words printed to correctly pronouncing them in real conversation.

Whenever possible, we use work-related materials, frequently created by the participant himself/herself. Additionally, we provide ideas (and materials) for follow-up so that participants can continue polishing their English.

Does frequent travel interfere with the training?

As always, we are willing to be flexible with our scheduling and can arrange times that are suitable for everyone.
